‘Alexa, open Global Player’

Helping users discover Global skills

Role: Product Designer

Duration: 2 months

Background

I worked with my Product Manager as well as two engineers and external Technical Project Manager to come up with the final solution. We also collaborated with other teams at Global.

Context:

Coronavirus has completely changed how we live our lives. With more people staying at home, we have noticed a big spike in content consumption via Alexa smart speakers. Although Global was offering a wealth of content and great skills for Alexa users before, the lockdown highlighted the disparity between live radio and the other skills available.

Research & Insights

To understand why the scale was tipped so far to one side, I ran some usability testing to see it first hand how users interact with Global Player on Alexa. The study revealed the following:

Users were unaware of the existence of most other skills

They didn’t know what they were supposed to ask for

The longer the utterance the lower the success rate

Expectations

We hope that by adding more context to the interactions between users and Alexa, people may feel more comfortable to try new utterances and explore other existing features.
